HobbyEagle A3 Super 4 with ELRS Setup: WORKS GREAT!

Published 2022-08-29
In this video, I'll show you how to use SBUS to connect your Express LRS receiver to a HobbyEagle A3 Super 4 6 Axis Gyro

A video on configuring the Eagles would be good (the Super 4 can be daunting). Also on testing the results before flying, I usually set the gain to max and attach a piece of card to the surfaces so when I move the plane around the axes I can see the gyro is compensating in the right directions ;-)

Thanks for taking your time explaining everything. It helped me choose to go for elrs with this gyro. Thanks for making choosing easier.
  • Glad to see ELRS options becoming available. Hoping to see lots of new fixed-wing stuff coming soon.
  • @Clickmaster5k
I think ELRS supports Sbus as part of the firmware options now. Might be worth updating the video description and maybe just making another vid about changing the options and pointing people to that one in the description to this one.

Great Video thanks for all the work you do for our hobby !!! and i would love to see a full blown video on the hobby eagle setup
  • Hi greetings from Germany! I really appreciate your insights on this topic. I also tried to pair cheap Express LRS receivers (without PWM) with a Kopilot Lite and couldn't achieve it so far. Yesterday I tried your way with the converter and a Betafpv 2400 Lite and it works like a charme! The nice thing with the smaller Betafpv receiver is that the size is very small and you can achieve a very small pack. That's really cool. Next thing will be to integrate it in the A3 Super 4 directly (have one laying around here), just need to create a new housing for both of them. In this way it would be very tidy and neat. Many thanks for your streams and all the other topics on RC! Cheers Rene

Those bumps on the antennae are just normal di-poles but in an in-line shape rather than a T-shape. The LNAs (Low Noise Amplifiers) are a chip on the receiver between the antennae and the RF chip. So feel free to swap antennas if they get damaged or if you want a different antennae or a longer one to mount on the plane differently. LNAs are a good topic for a video maybe.

Glad you made this video. it has helped clear up some things a bit with the hobby eagle/open tx interface, but 'm still unclear how to set up gains. I normally just use normal mode (off or acro?), autolevel (horizon aka intermediate), and full angle mode (stability). pretty much a straight AETR setup with the ailerons sharing Channel 1, and flaps on Channel5, flight modes (A3pro commands) channel six and set the gains to channel 7 or the dial. I have been using the red A3pro v2 with some of my aircraft with success using a FlySky 14+ 14ch mini 2A receiver with ibus outputs. But I cannot figure out how to set the gains on the right variable knob, and make them work using only the radio. I have an apple laptop, so using it only presents more problems. I hope you read this before tonights podcast which I plan to watch. Also having trouble on one plane getting flaps to drop in the slow up and down deployment,.....if that's a real word?!?!?!? incorrect inputs/outputs or mixing??????? Anyways, I'm a Big fan of your videos and appreciate your work very much. Thomas

Great explanation John. Ya you should do a video on full installation etc.
  • @MrLightstuff
The A3 Lite that replaces the A3 L has a spot for the throttle now too using sbus, and it works great with crsf/sbus converter. The A3 Mini is programable, sbus only, but I couldn't get the crsf/sbus converter to work with it, so I used D8 instead.

I'd love a full setup video, better yet setup and demo of the different modes while flying. :) Also, Is there any CRSF to XRSL2 boards? Coming from a Spektrum world, I'd love to use an AR637T as the flight controller, but binde with ELRS. So, if I could just plug into the XRLS2 port with an ELRS receiver, I can then get the Spektrum gyro and telemetry functions. Or am I missing something here?
  • @austinpranke8717
I gained very valuable information on configuring the Hobby Eagle A3S4 from your video with ELRS. I would really like to see a video dedicated to the A3S4 configuration.
  • @sansjunk
A3 Super 4 now supports direct CRSF serial receiver protocol by upgrading the firmware to version 1.6.
  • @tvhs1975
A great thorough video. Thanks so much. Im interested in HobbyEagle configuration. Wouldn’t it be at that point easier to use a flight controller? Im still learning. Really appreciate the amount of knowledge on your videos and i dont mind if they become an hour long 😊.
  • I'd really love to see you redo this with a larger ELRS receiver like the RadioMaster ER8 and the A3 Super 4 with a CRSF connection between the two. So, it would be a combo of serial data and PWM output. That way flaps, landing gear, and even lights could be direct to the RX, with Ailerons, throttle, rudder, and elevator connected to the A3 Super 4, which would be getting connected to the RX via CRSF. Especially if there is a way to Y the CRSF connection so that external telemetry data could could still work.
  • Im sure you will be asked to make the video , I would be interested in more info on the Hobbyeagle. Cracking video as always john
  • @MrLightstuff
Be advised. The new Matek PWM6 only works with elrs 3.0, but 3.0 is not backwards compatible with previous elrs rx. I had to go back to 2.5 on my main radio and put 3.0 on my little radio. One reason, like you said, not to fly with it yet.
  • @zipppiz
This is exactly what I wad looking for. I have three A3 V2 on order. Now would it be possible to connect Out 2 to the esc and then use this with ELRS since I plan to use it on a flying wing and it only needs the aileron and elevator to be connected to the Gyro. 🤔🤔🤔
  • @davidwatkin1484
👽👽👽👽👽👽👽👽👽👽 Hi John, thanks for the video. Concise delivery, love your work. The ZOHD Kopilot uses Ch5 for mode change. How do you get around this with the ELRS Ch5 requirement for arming? Look forward to your videos in 2024. Have a good one.
  • @ebikefe
Thanks for this video. I have a question - at 12:20, you mentioned the gyro doesn't see/recognize arming disarming using CH5 - isn't that a safety concern? What else is controlling (preventing) accidental throttle movements.?
