Cuckoo - Spectacular Insight into the Life of a Con Artist

Published 2022-11-18
It’s no news that cuckoos are brood parasites: they lay their eggs into the nests of other bird species – a clever trick that spares the rearing and feeding of own offspring. We’ve all heard the story. But why do other parent birds let this happen? Are they too stupid? Too inept? Or simply clueless? Admittedly, cuckoo’s eggs do usually look deceptively genuine. But the cuckoo chick? Not even remotely! It quickly grows into a giant that looks nothing like its new family. So why don’t the adoptive parents notice the sham then?

Some cuckoo chicks even go as far as to kill the other chicks in the nest. In most cases, however, they just smuggle their eggs into the nests of other birds, some of which are intelligent enough to spot this easily. Still, they don’t throw the egg out. Until recently, the ornithologists’ theory was: the “victims” have yet to learn to counteract. Turns out: they may even profit from having strangers’ chicks in their nest! So is cuckoo’s behavior a phenomenal trick or an evolutionary riddle?

Wow! The wild bird cooperating with the man is absolutely amazing. Its one thing when a bird is a pet and tamed, but a wild bird having that relationship with a human is amazing. Win win for eveyone lol

Marsh warbler is my hero!! Courageous enough to fight off a bird twice its size and smart enough to detect a cuckoo egg in its nest

This one is the best aves documentary I've ever watched ❤ Thank you for your wonderful footage and eloquently presented information 🙏🏿
  • Out of hundreds of high-quality nature documentaries I've watched over more than a half-century, I must say that this may be the single best one. Utterly extraordinary. I'm not easily shocked, but some of the bird behavior here was disturbing to watch, while other behaviors shown were mysterious -- clearly there's still a lot to be studied and learned about these amazing and complex creatures, and about natural selection and conservation of species.

Fantastic little documentary. Nature never ceases to amaze. Neither does the stellar work of the nature photographers who get such phenomenal shots of obscure places. Well done!

It's interesting to see the cuckoo's behavior the moment it puts its egg into the nest. Gets the job done real fast and gets out of there. I always wanted to know how they did it but couldn't find any other videos on it. Good job capturing all this

The cuckoo is so interesting. Someone mentioned to me today that they heard a cuckoo. I started thinking about the bird and what I learned about it in school. Great documentary.
