Watch as violence breaks out at an event to mark St George’s Day in central London on Tuesday 23 April.

A group of people pushed past Metropolitan Police officers and “violently forced their way through” as the force tried to contain the group within an allocated area near Whitehall.

Footage shows a number of people wearing St George’s flags pushing through a wall of police officers.

In a statement on social media, the Met Police said that they believed people planning to attend the rally included “far-right groups and groups linked to football clubs travelling from elsewhere in the UK”.

“Regrettably officers are already dealing with disorder,” a later statement, shared just after 2pm alongside the video, read.

    The police were blocking the people for no reason whatsoever, and then they attacked people who were trying to get to their meeting point. Police were the instigators - would like to see this behaviour at the pro-palestine marches, but of course they want those marches to go on

  • Violence? Been watching live and this episode only part which includes struggle because police blocked entrance. Some broke through. Everything continued without incident. Crowds proud to be British, enjoying themselves. About time.
