In short, Sonic games can be family friendly and take their stories seriously. Younger fans can engage with the games and older fans can enjoy the underlying themes.

People often forget that sonic is for kids but they don’t need to be super Family friendly or super Edgy There’s a balance to be had

I mean, there's an other piece of media about a young blue anthropomorphic animal (with an even younger, less confident orange one often following them around), that became EXTREMELY popular with all ages. The secret of that one is balance in managong to keep an engaging and complete story for the kids, and having an integrated (sometimes even paralelling) story, or sets of conversations in there for the adults. And emotion. Lots of emotion.

Its funny how everyone was making fun of Sonic being "too serious" but once he became family friendly everybody was like:"MY GOD HE'S SO ANNOYING, TURN IT BACK TURN IT BACK-"

I grew up reading the Archie Comics, particularly Ian Flynn's run with the characters from issue #160 onwards. Sonic is at my very favorite when it takes itself seriously but still has fun with the whole thing. Serious, dramatic moments like the Enerjak arc or the Eggman Wars and the Moebius invasion were also able to have fun and made for an excellent reading experience.

Maybe it would be wise to not get bogged down in story nonsense at all and just focus on the game part of the game. You know, the thing the made the franchise a household name in the first place.

I mean the whole concept of Sonic is to appeal to all audiences not just children or adults, the idea of saying it taking self seriously is amazing! It’s what made me care in the first place. Why expect cartoony animals being silly?
