I Evolved My Oldest Super Sonic Land Vehicle To Break The Sound Barrier WAY BETTER!

Welcome to another episode of Trailmakers! Today I want to revisit my old super sonic land vehicle that used a whopping 70 dragon engines to break the sound barrier. With what I know now about super sonic speed, I think I could get a huge improvement in the number of engines by evolving the design!

About Trailmakers:

In the toughest motoring expedition in the universe, you and your friends will build your own vehicles to cross a dangerous wasteland. Explore, crash horribly, use your wits to build a better rig, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find on your way.

Welcome to the Ultimate Expedition!

Journey over grueling mountains, hazardous swamps, and bone-dry deserts on a distant world far from civilization - it is just you, your fellow adventurers and the amazing, jet-powered hover-buggy you built yourself. Explore, crash your vehicle, build a better one, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find along your way.

Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.

Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.

Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.

Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

I like the fact that ScrapMan simply looks at his old vehicle and IMMEDIATELY spots various possible improvements. He has risen.

Scrapman, definitely revisit the small propeller sound barrier concept, it’s the one you couldn’t do! Now with your new knowledge, and improved small prop hitboxes, it’s definitely possible!

There is one improvement that you can make. If you have two wheels, one in the front and one in the back of a vehicle, there is a gap between the two wheels. You can fill the gap not with blocks, but with shields. Shields have a "hitbox" of the size of a normal block for the air, but the real HITbox does not exist. In your case, put 2 by 4 shield blocks on the bottom of the vehicle. It is going to remove the green arrows on the rear wheels.

If you are using gyro stabilizers anyways, then there's nothing keeping you from trying it with a single wheel. No skis, just a single wheel right behind the center of mass.
  • @Nariku
for those who don't understand why it rotates like that with the ski: what's happening is that the power is only coming from the rear right, which is causing a gradual turn to the left; whereas before there was also a wheel on the front left, which balanced the output.

I would love to see a video where you try to break the sound barrier in the shortest distance possible, since acceleration would be important just having lots of heavy engines wouldnt be the solution so it would probably be pretty cool

That editor is one of the best decision scrapman did for the channel! Really made the video better with the educational stuff

Idea: Break the sound barrier by spinning. Idea: Make a stable aircraft with no gyros or stabilizer fins. Idea: Dogfight with NO BUILD RULES Idea: Dogfight with only experimental/never built aircraft Idea: Glider race from the highest mountain on treasure island to a finish line (Not who makes it farthest but a RACE).
  • @Axolotl_1215
Idea: Make an airplane that can maintain stable flight without the use of a vertical tail fin/rudder or quantum rudder, by using logic or something.
  • OMG i wached to original vid when it came out but dosent feel like 4 years lol great vid keep it up(also where running out of sound barrier options lol)
  • @wavecraft123
Scrapman, I was able to break the sound barrier with only 17 dragon engines by using one wheel and an extra gyro! I uploaded the recording on my channel.
  • @goldenandesite
If you put shields on the underside, they will block the drag points on the rear wheels so you don’t have to use wedges in the back.

Out of all the youtubers I watch, Scrap Mechanic is definitely one of the most underrated. Crazy I am saying that now, while he's about 100k away from a million subs. I've been watching him for so long, I don't even remember when I started. Most likely my longest lasting youtuber I've watched.

@ScrapMan, All of your thruster based sound barrier vehicles can be improved thanks to the recessed ski method

Multiplayer Monday idea: car evolution, but randomly, like actual genetic mutation. So, start with the most bare-bones block on wheels you can make, and then have a bunch of options (extra wheels, suspension, different engines and thrusters, aerodynamic pieces, some really random stuff like weight blocks and ball spawners and so on) on a huge wheel of fortune type thing, and each of you has to spin the wheel to decide what you can add to your car each round. I think it would be fun and a challenge for more experienced builders like yourself.

9th day of asking, Dear Scrapman, I have an idea. The challenge would be to go as fast as possible in either kp/h or time from corner to corner of the grid map with a set power core limit like maybe 50 or 100. I think this would be an interesting challenge due to the need to balance aero, acceleration and the power limit. - Yes I will try on the discord, but I cant be bothered, and I'm stubborn, so I will try this method for 1 month and then start on discord.

A few videos back I had suggested skis, but on the BACK. Wheels in front, skis in back, inline with the bottom of the craft. I also used 4x1 arrow blocks all the way to the ground in front. Using this design I was able to break it with 18 dragon engines. Love all of the experiment videos, Scrap!
  • @wfuller4986
Scrap you should ask the devs to make grid map loop
  • @WoolyGriffin
Its crazy what removing 2 wheels can do. Glad I found that, you're welcome :)
