  • I scratched quite a few rocks with mine now over the years and it still almost looks like the day i bought it Those edges of the blades are strong as hell The back of the blade also felt quite strange to me in the beginning but after using it for a while and adjusting the way i hold my paddle when doing a backstroke that also works really well. Sometimes i wish mine (197,55 degrees) was a tiny little bit longer
  • I love how you use them eddy lines to run upstream. You make it look so easy. Way to go wade.

Nice review, Wade. Reason the blade feels strange on the back of the blade is caused by the forward set blade. On the forward stroke the blade stabilize super fast, on backward stokes it cranks away. The axis of the blade is offset to the axis of the pull (hand). I could not get used to it with rolling, here again it cranks if you your blade has a bit to much negative angle. But it has the best grip for forward strokes by far

I just ordered a G'Power Harpoon X. It would be interesting to see how the back face compares playboating since Stephen Wright loves his in that application. He did share that in big water it will slip as you mentioned and that his solution was to use a little epoxy.

Dude I got one when I bought a Tuna, guy just threw it in with the package.6 years later I can’t use anything else. I bought a surge which I like, but the Lettmann is just another level. It has a learning curve but feels so good in the water.

I have a G'Power Twister X-creek that also has a connector, but it isn't metal and isn't marked like this one. I love the flexibility on length and feather, I plan on going for a 90 offset when I'm racing. Right now I'm using 200 R45 for downriver. I feel like the blades on the twister are just about the same as what I'm seeing in your review and also I felt that same odd buoyancy when I first started using it, and it took some getting used to. One question, you mentioned having to get used to rolling with it, but you didn't go into any detail, what's the issue with rolling?
  • Great review Wade, is the shaft ovalized ? Would love you to compare this paddle to or make a review of the galasport manic mcq, even a straight shaft 🙏
  • @WildwaterKayak
I’m about to buy a second! But I’m getting the nitro with the forward offset. I have a galasport manic and odachi an a surge that’s like that also but these lettmanns are sick. I have a paddle obsession I guess, gotta have them all. Lol, it’s only like 4K in paddles haha 😆

It is a great paddle for an open hand vertical paddling style. If you hold the paddle in your fist, the ergo shaft has a negative effect. It is ideal if the paddle shaft is held in the front part of the fingers like a handle of a suitcase. With the first stroke of the paddle, you let the paddle align itself in your hand. Since the shaft is in front of the paddle blade, you don't have to stabilise the paddle with a firm grip, it stabilises itself and aligns itself with the water pressure. Of course, when you are at your personal limit, you will hold the paddle less loosely. :-) The style with the more open hand has an effect on the whole hand-arm-shoulder system, you align yourself wonderfully with the water pressure. The paddle should be extended by a maximum of 5 cm (2 inches). It is not a light paddle, but a very stable one. The two-part paddle is also very good for the plane as hand luggage. Have fun with the beautiful Lettmann paddle!

I'd like to see you try that paddle in a long boat on a speed run down ocoee or green.
  • That’s a sweet paddle ! Looked at them - Ordered one of the Ophion carbon paddles going to give it a shot - anything from Europe seems to take about 2 forevers right now
  • @ShawnS67
Great review. Do you like the Lettman better than your Surge? Where is Lettman available in the USA?
  • Sweet vid!!! Really interested in buying one.. how’s the paddle still holding up? And where could I get one on the east coast?
  • @chrisparent3018
Thanks for the review. I've watched this and your Gpower twister review. How are these paddles for downriver play? Stern prys/ reverse sweeps? I have a warn out powerhouse and wanted to try something new maybe with a blade forward design. The design for a vertical forward stroke makes perfect sense, just wondering how it is with slicy runs.
  • @WildwaterKayak
I got a straight shaft from Seth Holloway a month or so back and took it in a Colorado river Multi day trip. And I have to say this paddle is sick Seth was telling me to maybe go with the crank shaft but I wanted a stronger paddle for that price and it’s extremely light compared to my bent shaft shogun.

Best paddle out there. Can you share who distributes in SE?
  • @kayaktoast
Hey Wade. Nice video! Do you remember the minimum length of that paddle that you tested? Cheers.
