The Octopus In My House
A professor develops an extraordinary relationship with an octopus when he invites it to live in his home. The octopus, called Heidi, unravels puzzles, recognises individual humans and even watches TV with the family. The episode also shows remarkable behaviour from around the world - from the day octopus, which can change colour and texture in a split second, to the coconut octopus, which carries around its own coconut shell to hide in. But most fascinating of all is seeing how Professor David Scheel and his daughter Laurel bond with an animal that has nine brains, three hearts and blue blood running through its veins.

Welcome to BBC EARTH! The world is an amazing place full of stories, beauty and natural wonder. Here you'll find 50 years worth of entertaining and thought-provoking natural history content. Dramatic, rare, and exclusive, nature doesn't get more exciting than this.

When you struggle to open a jar, just give it to the octopus.

I immediately thought two things when he gave her a way to call him into the room. 1. She's going to figure that out with the quickness. 2. He's going to get real sick of that Bell, real fast.
  • Crab is like, "No, dont twist it! No, dont twist it!! NO, DONT TWIST IT!!!! I'm toast."
  • @cherrycreeper
This man is so wholesome just being with his little octopus lmao

Bell is the best thing she’s ever had, giving her power to summon a friend at will… so smart and seems emotionally attached
  • Octopus: * rings the bell for 10 hours straight *🛎️ Neighbour: "What the hell do you think you're doing?"

The light and buzzer test was a little too successful. I loved the sequence taken at night from outside. What a brat.

As soon as I saw her pull the doorbell I immediately thought 'she's gonna pull that at 4am'. I have cats 😂

It'd be interesting to see if you put 2-3 different balls, with only one doing the action. I feel like that'd give a little more insight on how much of it is just play, and how much of it is wanting attention.
  • a most stunning animal, they have eight arms, three hearts and the brain throughout the body 🤔😂WOW! Nature!

Originally, this was an hr program on PBS. He is a university biology professor. He decided to get this octopus, take her home, set up the tank and his daughter Laurel would engage with her. She was named Heidi. She was so smart. As they only live a few years, I don’t think she’s around any more. I’m sure they learned a lot from her. I’ve watched it several times, it’s amazing!
  • You gave another intelligent creature the chance to call the shots & it quickly placed you under it's thumb.

Could it be that an octopus is way brighter than we thought? Great experiment. A pleasure to watch every time.

What a fascinating story! I hope you’ll share more of Heidi’s adventures with us.

I loved this experiment. I laughed at the buzzer going off, over and over!!!

She's such a delight! I'll never understand why some people seem to think that animals, even aquatics, don't have personalities. She's such a clever little thing! Figuring out the lever to summon you at all hours... I giggled out loud, it's such a bratty little thing to do, like a toddler calling for your attention in the middle of the night. My own aquatic (an axolotl) isn't doing too hot at the moment, so it was really nice to watch her play and be happy!
